My T1D Story
I'm Reneé, AKA Diabettie. Thankfully, it's not DKA. I was diagnosed with Late-Onset Type 1 Diabetes in 2021 at the age of 45. Did you know that the majority of Late-Onset Type 1's are misdiagnosed as a Type 2, generally for two years before finding out they are actually a Type 1?
My story begins with working for two different diabetes companies for seven years. I had learned a lot about diabetes and its signs and symptoms. When I went to a doctor's appointment years after working for those companies, I noticed my blood sugar was high on my results for labs. So, I made an appointment for a physical to have it re-checked. It was high again. My doctor wanted to wait a year to re-check, but I informed him about my previous high fasting blood glucose. He then wanted me to come in for an A1C. I said, "I'm assuming we are looking at Type 1 Diabetes?" He chuckled and said, "No, Type 2."
When I went into my appointment to get my blood drawn I explained to the doctor we just had my results from my physical and I had no other co-morbidities. I did not have high blood pressure, high lipids, high cholesterol, or was obese. I then asked to have a C-Peptide test done. The results came back and I was referred out to an endocrinologist. I had Late-Onset Type 1 Diabetes.
I am now on insulin and have not felt this good in years. I am so thankful that I was able to know the signs and symptoms of diabetes and the differences between Type 1 and Type 2. We must all be our own best advocates!
